Building on soil
(Horizon), Cranfield University
As the population of the world increases so does the need to build houses and more infrastructure. Building on soil uses and seals up that soil for all time, hence rendering it unusable for future food production. So there is a confict of interest for the use of land with important ramifications . Here is an example from Hong Kong where there is huge pressure to extend building on land to accommodate more people but at the same time this reduces the amount of land available for food production.
