Description

An exposure showing soils developed over Jurassic Great Oolite clays on the Witney By-pass in Oxfordshire, England. The upper darker layers of the soils are in a Head deposit, material mixed by location at the edge of an ice sheet. This brown and greyish clayey Head sits on contorted Forest Marble clay of the Jurassic geological period. Most of the soils exposed in the image belong to the Evesham series, classified in the WRB international classification as calcaric vertic Cambisols and in the classification for England and Wales (Avery) as typical calcareous pelosols. Cuttings like this are important for showing the lateral and vertical variation that there is in many soils.
