Site of the Berkhamsted soil, a palaeoargillic brown earth developed in a silty (loessic ? Drift over Plateau Drift. The Berkhamsted soil is quite common on the Chiltern Hills and adjacent areas. The vegetation of this site is dominated by bracken with grassy patches and occasional ash, elder and willow trees.
